The popularity of air fryers has skyrocketed in recent months, and it’s really no surprise. Air fryers provide a quick, easy and healthy way of cooking. They are also much more energy efficient in comparison to traditional ovens, due to the fact that they cook food much faster. But how do you keep your air fryer clean and performing at its best? Here are our top tips on how to keep your air fryer clean and looking like new!

1. Clean your air fryer after each use

The food that you cook in an air fryer can leave behind fat and oils which can settle at the bottom of the basket drawer. The longer this is left, the tougher it will be to remove. If you smell odour coming from your air fryer, or it is producing smoke while cooking, this indicates that grease has collected in the drawer, or that leftover pieces of food are trapped in the basket holes. That’s why we recommend that you clean your air fryer after each use. Before you begin cleaning your air fryer, always remember to unplug it at the wall and let it cool.

2. Clean removable parts with soapy water

Once you have unplugged your air fryer, you should take out the removable parts such as the basket and the drawer. Clean each part with warm water and washing-up liquid, using a soft sponge or cloth so that the non-stick coating doesn’t get damaged. Make sure you get into the gaps of the basket to ensure it is completely clean.

3. Remove stuck food debris

If there are stubborn burned-on pieces of food which won’t come off with the sponge, you can make a paste consisting of baking soda and water. Leave the paste on the stubborn parts for 20 minutes and let it work its magic. Or if you don’t have 20 minutes to spare, you can use an old toothbrush or small cleaning brush to buff in the paste.

4. Clean main unit

The main unit of the air fryer can’t be submerged and will need to be cleaned by hand. Use a cloth or sponge dipped in warm soapy water and check the heating coil (located on the underside of the air fryer) for grease and food debris. You can use a soft brush to remove stuck food, but stay away from steel wool. Ensure that this is rinsed properly so that no soap is left on the coil.

5. Dry and reassemble

Once you have cleaned all of the components, dry them thoroughly and then reassemble your air fryer ready for the next use!

Here are some other top tips for keeping your air fryer in great condition!

Stay away from abrasives

Abrasives such as steel wool or metal utensils can damage the non-stick coating of your air fryer, leading to the coating flaking off over time. This is why it is best to stick to soft cloths or sponges when cleaning your appliance.

Try air fryer liners

Air fryer liners are a great way to make cleaning your air fryer a breeze. You can get disposable paper liners, or reusable silicone liners which can be easily cleaned.

Remove odours with this solution

If food has left a lingering odour in your air fryer even after cleaning, here is a solution to get it smelling fresh again. All you need is some household ingredients:

  • 30ml lemon juice
  • 30ml white vinegar
  • 60ml water

Place this solution into a small air fryer-safe bowl and set the air fryer to 200 Celsius. Let the air fryer run for 2 minutes and then switch it off. Allow to cool before wiping with a damp cloth.
