Are you considering purchasing the latest iPhone model, but not sure whether you should opt for the iPhone 14 or the iPhone 14 Pro? We’re here to help! In this blog we have done a comparison showing the differences between the standard iPhone 14 and the Pro version. We hope this iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro comparison helps you decide on the best iPhone for you!

Price

The first thing you’ll probably want to know is the price. Naturally, the Pro model is more expensive. At the time of writing, Apple has the iPhone 14 priced from £849, and the iPhone 14 Pro starts from £1,099. This is for the 128GB models, so bare in mind that if you want more storage you will need to pay a bit extra. But is the £250 price difference justified? We hope this comparison will help you decide!

Display

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro both feature a 6.1inch display, so there is no difference in terms of the display size. If you want a bigger screen, you’ll need to opt for the iPhone 14 Plus or the iPhone 14 Pro Max which feature a larger 6.7inch display. Both models have Apple’s Super Retina XDR, but where they differ noticeably is brightness. The iPhone 14 is rated to have a peak HDR brightness of 1,200 nits, while the iPhone 14 Pro has an impressive peak HDR brightness of 2,000 nits. This makes the Pro especially great for outdoor use.

The Pro model also offers Always On Display, which allows you to see information without your phone screen being on and unlocked.

Design

The iPhone 14 looks practically identical to the iPhone 13, although it does come in some fresh new colours. Choose from Starlight (silver), Midnight (black/navy), Red, Blue and Purple. The iPhone 14 Pro has a more luxurious look, coming in four colour options: Silver, Gold, Deep Purple and Space Black. The Pro has also had a bigger design change. The notch at the top of the display has been replaced by a “Dynamic Island.” This is a pill-shaped cut-out which features the front camera plus sensors. It also displays animations and widget information. The Dynamic Island is designed to adapt with your actions, for example if you use Apple Pay, the Dynamic Island will turn into a square. And if you’re on a phone call, it will widen and show the call duration and sound waves if you open another app during the call.

The Dynamic Island is a significant design change from Apple considering that the notch has featured on iPhones since 2017. So if you’re looking for something different in terms of design, the Pro may be for you.

Camera

Another big consideration for many of us is the camera. We all want to capture great memories, and our phone is the tool that we always have on hand. The iPhone 14 has dual rear cameras: a 12MP main wide camera and a secondary ultra-wide camera. These are the same resolutions as seen on the iPhone 13, and the main camera has been upgraded to the same as seen on the iPhone 13 Pro.

Comparatively, the iPhone 14 Pro got a notably bigger camera upgrade. It offers a 48MP main sensor, along with a 12MP ultra-wide sensor with a wider aperture and a 12MP telephoto sensor. The Pro model is also able to offer 3x optical zoom, whereas the standard iPhone 14 only has 5x digital zoom. The Pro also has the ProRES function which allows you to take 48MP raw shots. The front camera got the same upgrade across all iPhone 14 models with a 12MP camera and an autofocus function which is ideal for selfies and video calls.

The iPhone 14 and the 14 Pro also share a lot of camera features such as Night Mode, Portrait Mode, Cinematic Mode, Action Mode and more. Overall, the iPhone 14 Pro has the superior camera, but the standard iPhone 14 still takes great photos too. This depends whether you care about having one of the best phone cameras out there, or if you just want a phone that takes good photos.

Performance

Another difference between the iPhone 14 and the 14 Pro is the type of chip which powers them. The iPhone 14 features the A15 Bionic chip, whereas the iPhone 14 Pro gets the new A16 Bionic chip. As a result, the Pro has the edge when it comes to performance. Although, the difference is marginal and would probably only be noticed by performance enthusiasts.

Battery

What about battery? If we are investing in a phone, we want to know that it will last us all day. Apple doesn’t state battery capacities, so it is best to go off of user tests. One user test tasked the phones with constantly reloading webpages over a cellular connection. The iPhone 14 lasted 9.5 hours, whereas the iPhone 14 Pro was slightly better lasting just over 10 hours. So, the Pro has the edge although overall these battery capacities aren’t that impressive. If long battery life is your top concern, you are probably better off opting for the iPhone 14 Plus or the iPhone 14 Pro Max. These larger models have larger batteries, with the Pro Max lasting 14 hours, 42 minutes and the Plus lasting 11 hours, 57 minutes in the same test.

The Verdict

The iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro are both great smartphones which will offer you pretty much everything you need. The Pro model is £250 more expensive than the standard model, but it does offer a brighter display, a fresh design, and a superior camera with speedier performance. So if you have the budget, the Pro is worth the extra cost. But if you just want a good phone which takes good pictures and comes in fun colours, the iPhone 14 will do the job.
