How to Create Your Own Outdoor Fairy Orb Lighting

It is coming up to that time of year again where people will be hosting outdoor parties, if the lockdown restriction allow of course. What better way to brighten up your garden than with a bit of DIY outdoor lighting? We have put together a simple guide on how to make your very own outdoor lighting decorations, made with wire! This creates a beautiful and unique looking decoration, perfect for those late night get togethers.

What you will need:

  • Wire to create the orbs.
  • Wire cutters.
  • Any ball that can be deflated- you can get a variety of sizes if you want different sized orbs. A beach ball would be perfect.
  • Outdoor fairy lights– solar powered lights are a good option but you can use any.
  • Rope or string to hang the orbs up.

How to create the Fairy Orbs

Step 1: Pre cut around 30 short bits of wire with your wire cutters. These pieces of wire will be used to hold the larger wires in place to keep the orb shape intact.

Step 2: Wrap your wire around the beach ball to create the orb shape. It is best to deflate the beach ball once the orb shape starts to take place to ensure you have enough room to remove the ball.

Step 3: Use your pre cut wire to create knots around the orb to keep it in place.

Step 4: Continue to repeat the process until you are happy with the shape and density of your orb. You can also change the sizes of the orb by using different sizes of beach balls.

Step 5: Wrap the fairy lights around the orbs. This can be quite messy and you can use as many or as little lights as you desire.

Step 6: Lastly, add some rope to your orbs to hang them up around the garden.

Optional: You can paint your orbs or put them out in the rain for a while to create a cool rusted effect! You could also look for shaped fairy lights or colour changing lights for something a bit different!
